Shambho:
Shambho: The Password to Existence
I. The Reverberation of the Lineage
The most dominant factor of my life has been my guru, and nothing else, even today. More than in my mind—literally in every crevice of my body, every pulsation in my system, and my very energy—it is just his presence which is the most dominant within me. Probably because of this, just about everything reverberates—not me, but way beyond me, way bigger than me.
I did not see my guru as a man who touched me, though his touch brought me to the highest level of experience and a revelation of life and beyond. My guru sat in states of samadhi for long periods of time near the Palani Hills. People called him “Palani Swami.” It so happened that when he was near the Palani Hills, more people started gathering around him than going to the temple. The priests became agitated and tried to find fault, claiming he was chanting Shiva’s name even during times of defecation. They called a panchayat to judge him. He came and sat there with his eyes closed and his mouth closed, but loud and clear, everyone could hear the sound “Shambho” reverberating from his body. That was the end of their project for him. Later, he went up the Seventh Hill and shed his body there.
That is why we are sitting here today. For me, this is not a mountain. This is a temple.
The ultimate can find expression through various steps of reverberation. In the Velliangiri mountain, the mantra Shambho is the basic reverberation. At Isha, the energy of Shambho has been very dominant. Just as wind shapes the terrain of the planet, the Dhyanalinga Temple and the Isha Yoga Center are engineered by the sound Shambho. This is a sound that has been powerfully consecrated and prepared. This particular mantra has been powerfully used here to enhance life to its fullest maturity and ultimately to liberate it from its limitations.
II. The Ultimate Password
I did not grow up in any spiritual culture; I was very agnostic. I had not even heard these words—Shiva, Shambho—until that life-changing experience on Chamundi Hill. About three or four weeks later, my breath would suddenly rasp, and I couldn’t stop it. I thought I was having a breathing problem.
Something was trying to come out of me, and I was keeping my mouth closed, not allowing it to happen. When I finally learned to keep my mouth open, that’s when I first heard the sound—“SH”. Since then, I realized this is one sound which can open up a universe for me. Whether I sit, stand, or do nothing, it keeps happening within me.
There is no logical explanation for Shambho; it is way beyond explanations. But that will be the last thing I will say in my life. It is not a practice or a discipline; it’s just that nothing gets going without it. If you want to access my account, that’s the password, and I’m giving it away.
It was devised to set fire to you, to awaken you so deeply that you can never fall asleep again—not even in death. For me, Shambho is all that I know. It is the password to my very existence.
III. The Meaning of “Shambho”
One important aspect of Shiva is “Shambho.” Normally, Shambho, or that aspect of this root energy, is worshipped only by people who are on the spiritual path, because the word “Shambho” means “the auspicious one.”
The most auspicious thing that can happen to you is to realize yourself, is to reach the highest within yourself. We think, unfortunately, that getting married is auspicious; getting a promotion is auspicious; building a new house is auspicious… The most auspicious thing that can happen to you in your life is that you reach the peak within yourself.
In that form of Shambho, Shiva seems to respond to us much better than any other form. This is the ID. This is the code: Shambho.
IV. The Intent of Dissolution
When you say “Shambho,” you must say it like it is the last thing you will ever say. You want to throw out everything. This is the last thing you’re going to do. You say it because you want to dissolve with the sound.
You are not asking for help with small things. You seek the blissfulness of the uncreated. If you are seeking survival, you are calling the wrong person. Shiva is waiting for a moment of vulnerability when he can crack you open to a new dimension.
